INSTASCAPE is, as the name suggests, is an emergency escape device. This specially designed device helps the worker to escape from any hazardous situation which may develop while working at heights. It was designed specifically to suit the requirement of oil rigs. However, it can also be used for other applications which may demand similar escape facility. It consists of two counter balancing trolley chair units traveling up and down on the track rope. The chairs are connected to each other with an automatic speed control mechanism which is fitted above the monkey board of the rig. This automatic speed control mechanism limits and controls the speed of descent to 9 ft./sec.. However, the system is also fitted with a hand brake which can be operated by the person in the trolley. In case of a blowout, the person at the top of the rig (called the Top Man) embarks the chair trolley and comes down to safety within a matter of seconds, away from the source of fire. At the same time the other chair trolley unit automatically goes up in the opposite direction, thus ensuring that at least one empty chair trolley unit is always at the top when needed. The whole system does not require any external power source for operation, but is completely driven by gravity. This device can be used by any person working at heights where the situation may demand emergency escape at the shortest notice.
